First Engagement Photoshoot

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

I journeyed out to Quail Hill in Irvine last week to take engagement photos of some good friends.  It was their 1st engagement photoshoot and mine too!  I don’t know what I’m doing, but I found something I enjoy: taking pictures of people!

The Bride: Jennifer, full-time beauty, part-time lab tech, originally from the bay area, who finally moved to the south to be with the love of her life.
The Groom: Steve, graphic designer to the children’s toy market, avid automotive enthusiast & racer (who happens to be one of our best friends of mine & Benson’s for probably 10+ years now.)
Wow: they had a baby just about 7 months ago!  They both look so well rested!

We showed up to Quail Hill, later than we hoped to and had just 45 minutes to shoot.  It was a challenge straight out of a TV show.  In 45 minutes I set 20 different scenes, broke the ice and had them kiss each other probably 50 times!

What I learned from this shoot:

  • start earlier
  • put extra memory cards in my pocket (rather than leaving them with Ben)
  • give the couple enough time to break the ice with you
  • bring more props
  • change lenses
  • bring a chair or something I can stand on to get different perspective
  • bring a tripod for the low-lit shots at the end

Like I said, I don’t know what I’m doing, but I sure had a lot of fun.  I hope to get the opportunity to do this again.

Kissing is key to breaking the ice!

Brought a red blanket to pop out of the grass

One of my favorite shots, they look so comfy!!

Jennifer's legs look fab in this shot

When I was shooting these, I wasn't sure if they were going to come out!

Another set that I was taking a chance on. Chance well taken!!!

Thanks for reading.  Happy Easter!

Cute Cars

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

My latest 2 photo projects: friends cars.  I’m a big automotive enthusiast and racer.  I’ll tell you about pretty shoes made in Italy then pause to gawk at a pretty car passing by.  Taking pictures of friends’ cars that happen to be in the right place at the right time is something I’ve encountered a couple times this past week.

Jesse's 1965 Shelby Cobra replica

Jesse’s car just happened to be hanging out at Temple City Auto Repair during the Drifting Pretty tech day workshop.  Its a new car built from the ground up.  Its new but not.  Hot car hello!!!!

Shant's 1974 BMW 2002

Shant, of my lunch bunch at work, seems to always get suckered into driving us to lunch spots in his BMW 2002.  I’ve never driven a car more difficult to drive in my life.  I love this car though, its a beaut!!!  On the roof of the parking structure at work during the last 5 minutes of our lunch break.

What do you want to be?

I was watching Jasmine Star, a genius wedding photographer doing a class on CreativeLive.  She only started shooting 4 years ago…but has become a sensation and an inspiration to many (including me).  Its crazy to me how once again I’m inspired to take on another hobby, which could easily turn into something more if I just put my mind to it.

10 years ago I was working towards a career in professional car racing (drifting).  It proceeded to take all the fun out of racing for me.  8 years ago I switched gears (to reality) and founded Drifting Pretty (a woman’s car racing school).  Since then its been going strong!  In 2005 I became an expert (especially on paper/invitations) and got married, grew my family, got a safe 9-5 in finance, and became an expert in real estate and bought a house.  I find things like racing, wedding invitations, real estate and they all interest me so much.  I want to learn everything there is about them and embrace it all.  I don’t ditch things when they get boring, I just keep them on the plate and keep nibbling away at them.  Is that is a weakness or a strength!?

I took up photography officially when Benson & my buds got me an SLR last October.  Since then, I’ve taken 7,000 shots and have been learning so much.  I’m having so much fun taking portraits of my friends, and their kids especially and even my students in Drifting Pretty.  My cats have been loving the attention too.  Where is all this headed?  Another “hobby” or more?

Hi I’m Nadine, I love racing cars and teaching women how to do that.  Oh yah and I’m an aspiring photographer?  I have to let this all soak in.

For now, I’ll leave you with more of my journey to figuring out what the heck I’m doing with the camera.

Clouds
I put on the polarizer again after a stressful day at work.  This is how I de-stressed:

This is me aiming the camera straight at the cloud covered sun.  The pics turned about more amazing than they looked on the SLR screen.  I thought they were going to suck, so I switched to taking pictures of Vera Wang.  She was the challenge.  Constantly following within 3″ of my camera.  I learned to run in front of her really quick, turn around, lie on the ground and snap 3 quick shots before she made it to my lens.

Purple Daisies

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Finally got to play with the new polarizer filter on the camera today.  It wasn’t quite sunny enough, but we caught some sweet pre-sunset light.  Elise skipped her 2-hour nap today.  She wasn’t exactly in the smiley mood.  Here are a few raw photos.   I wish I could make more time to take photos!

Just another evening at the Hsu residence...Elise picking daisies, the new cars on the driveway, the old beat up drift cars no where in sight.

Working in a prime photography location

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

I work in old town Pasadena.  My office is nestled among lots of prime photo-ops.  The entire back of our building is even a mural (shown in photos 2 & 3).

I ordered a polarizer on Amazon a few days ago…I THOUGHT it was coming in today, so I brought my SLR to work.  UPS failed me, but heck, I still took my SLR out during lunch.

Lately I’ve been trying to challenge myself by trying to get great shots…without the help of photo-editing software.  Here are some raw photos from today’s 20 minute lunch shoot…

Much appreciation to my photo subjects…mysterious Accounting guys, who “hate” getting their pictures taken.  Doesn’t look like you’re hating it much guys!

You'll find us here at Starbucks daily at 3pm

My cup leaks? View of our mural & a solar panel tracker thing we're testing.

I got rainbows coming out my butt and don't even know it

New Eye

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

For Valentine’s day, Benson gave me the green light to get a lens!  I’ve had my eye on this lens since December, but could never get the guts to push that “buy” button on Amazon until a few days ago.  The lens arrived Friday, just in time for this weekend & the beautiful California weather.

The lens is a Tamron 28-75 2.8, which so far has proven to be quite versatile.  I photograph mainly to capture my kiddies growing up, so it looks as if this could be one of the only lenses I will need.  I may want another in the future, but this is going to hold me over for a long time.  The lens is super fast and has made it easy to shoot tight portraits (with blurring the background) as well as wide landscape shots and everything in the middle.

500 shots in, here are some of the results:

Time Elapse

There isn’t enough time…or maybe I’m just not using my time wisely!?

As I work my full-time accounting job, run Drifting Pretty, be a mommy to my gals, be a wife, enjoy my hobbies, help take care of both my grandmas who are having health issues and somehow find time to write blogs and brush my teeth…I realize time is so scarce and so valuable.  Its been so difficult choosing what to spend my time on.  Right now its everything!  I think something has to give.  It certainly won’t be easy.  Maybe I’ll just stop brushing my teeth or doing laundry?!

One of the loves in my life…Drifting Pretty kicked off its 8th year of operation this past weekend.  Its truly amazing.   Tons of gals rumbling in with their noisy cars,  running around my culdesac screaming, laughing, flipping photos while carrying textbooks on car racing…all joining together for a good cause: learning how to race.  Its a pretty magical sight!  Congratulations to our 2011 students.  Can’t wait to race with you this year!!!

She Drifts Again…

I finally have plans to take my 240 back to the drift track.  Oh how I have missed you pink drift car.  As I slated up the 2011 Drifting Pretty schedule, I committed to driving a drift event with the DP gals.  My deadline will be May 1st to get the car back to working condition.  There aren’t major problems with the car, just faulty intercooler pipes that I warped when I drove last and ran over my own front bumper.   I’m going to have Elton @ Raceline fab me some new piping.  The only challenge is to get my car there…she has no tags or intercooler pipes.  So she needs to be towed.

After that, I need to work on the brakes.  I’m hosting a Drifting Pretty tech day to finally put on some StopTech brakes and Z32 rear calipers.  That feeling of having brand new parts sitting around un-installed is depressing!  I hope I can do that job in a day.  I also got a beautiful new Veilside hood (thank you to Benson, I love you :), so I need to install the hoodpins for that.  And I need a new battery and a fluid change and I ::hope:: that is all I’ll need to be ready for the track.  That’s all?!  Wow that list sure got long.   Here we go!!!

Photog
All the time I usually spend blogging has been dedicated to my new hobby of photography.  Benson & my friends got together and got me an SLR for my birthday last October.  I got a Canon T2i.  Friends have been so generous to lend me all sorts of lenses.  6,000 shots in, I’m possibly getting the hang of it!  This weekend when it was about to rain, I took Elise out for a quick Birthday photo shoot in the backyard with a borrowed 50mm 1.4 lens.   There is this beautiful magnolia tree in my backyard just covered in flowers!!!  Talk about photo opp.

Elise turns 3 later this month.  There are a few more fantastic photos, but you’ll see those if you’re lucky enough to be on her guestlist haha.

Happy Girl Scout cookie month and Happy Chinese New Year this Saturday.

See you soon!
